Most packing advice treats wind as a modifier on temperature. It's better understood as its own condition, because it changes which features of a garment matter. In still air, warmth comes from thickness. In wind, it comes from closure.

Why Closures Beat Thickness

Your body warms a thin layer of air trapped against your skin and inside your clothing. Wind works by blowing that warm layer away and replacing it with cold air, which is why it feels far colder than the thermometer reads.

A wind-resistant outer layer slows that exchange so your insulation can actually do its job rather than being continuously flushed with cold air. But fabric is only half of it. Wind that can't get through a panel will happily come up a loose hem, in through an open cuff, or down an unzipped collar, and once it's inside the garment the fabric's rating is irrelevant.

That's the practical hierarchy for a windy destination. A moderately warm jacket with elastic cuffs, a drawcord hem, and a hood that stays up outperforms a warmer one that's open at every edge.

The Spec Nobody Checks

Air permeability is a published number and most travelers have never heard of it. It's measured in CFM, cubic feet per minute of air passing through a square foot of fabric under standard pressure, usually via the ASTM D737 test.

The logic runs opposite to waterproof ratings: lower is better.

These figures appear on real products. The North Face's Zephyrus is listed at 2 CFM. Patagonia's Houdini moved from around 36 CFM in an early version to about 4 in later ones. Pertex Quantum sits around 2.

Two honest caveats. Air permeability is assessed by several different standards, and results from different test methods can't be reliably compared, so treat CFM as directional across brands rather than absolute. And there's no single best number: a fully airtight garment blocks every gust but traps your own moisture, which is why a small controlled amount of air permeability is often better if you'll be moving.

If you'd rather evaluate a jacket you already own, there's a field test. Hold the fabric against your mouth and blow as hard as you can. An average adult generates roughly 2 psi that way, about equivalent to a 20 mph wind. If your breath passes through easily, so will the wind.

The Mechanical Problems

Wind is the one condition that creates packing problems having nothing to do with temperature.

Umbrellas don't work. An umbrella is a sail. Above moderate wind it inverts, breaks, or becomes something you're fighting rather than sheltering under.
