Fill Power Is the Spec That Decides Your Bag Size
Fill power measures how many cubic inches of loft a single ounce of down produces. It's a quality rating, and it maps directly onto how much space your warm layer takes.
REI's guidance gives the arithmetic: in theory, 50 grams of 900-fill-power down provides the same warmth as 100 grams of 450-fill-power down, and compresses to about half the space. For a snow trip that's the largest available saving, because insulation is the bulk. A high-fill-power jacket and a low-fill-power jacket of equal warmth are not equal luggage.
Two honest caveats, both from REI. Fill power measures the down's quality, not the garment's warmth: a 900-fill jacket containing only 30 grams of fill won't be warmer than a 450-fill jacket containing 100 grams. For reference, synthetic insulation is generally reckoned equivalent to about 550 to 600 fill power. So a good down layer genuinely does pack smaller than a synthetic one of the same warmth.
Down or Synthetic Depends on the Snow
The choice isn't universal, and the deciding factor is temperature rather than preference.
Cold, dry snow. Well below freezing, snow lands on your outer layer and brushes off. Down is the right call: warmer for its weight, and it packs to a fraction of the size.
Wet snow near freezing. Snow that's half-melted, or turning to sleet, soaks in. Down loses roughly 70 to 80 percent of its insulating effectiveness when wet. Synthetic retains around 90 percent. In that band, synthetic is worth the extra bulk.

Almost Everything Bulky Is a Singleton
Here's the framing that makes snow packing tractable. Count the genuinely large items on a snow trip: parka, snow boots, snow pants, hat, gloves, scarf.
You need exactly one of each. Not one per day, not two for variety. One.
Which means snow overpacking is almost never about duplicates. It's about alternates: a second jacket in case the first isn't warm enough, a second pair of boots in case the first isn't right, a spare hat. Each of those is among the biggest items in the bag, and each is brought because a decision wasn't made at home.
Make the decision at home. Commit to one parka rated for the conditions, one pair of boots, and stop.
The corollary is that the layers underneath scale down too. Cold weather means little sweating, so mid layers and sweaters stay clean far longer than they would on a warm trip. Two mid layers usually covers a week, and they may not need washing at all.
Wear the Two Biggest Things
Your parka and your boots are the largest items you'd otherwise pack, and travel days don't require you to look polished. Wearing both costs nothing in luggage space and removes the two things most likely to make a bag not close.

Snow pants, ski gear and technical equipment are the highest-volume, lowest-frequency items on any winter trip. Rental is widely available at winter destinations, and for anything you'll wear on one or two days it's usually the better decision on both cost and luggage.
